The location of a greenhouse is crucial for its long-term usability. Incorrect installation means less sunlight, colder air, and poorer growth, while correct installation means more seasons of full harvest. In this article, we go through everything you need to know before installation.
Orientation in relation to the sun
The best orientation for a greenhouse in Slovenia is north-south for the longer axis. This way, all plants receive sunlight either in the morning or in the afternoon, and the difference in lighting is minimal. In the case of east-west orientation, the northern gable remains permanently in the shade, which is a problem with high cultures, such as tomatoes and beans.
For greenhouses under 4 m wide, the difference is smaller, but for wider constructions (8 m+), orientation is key. Our guides for gardeners discuss several types of installation.

Amount of daily light
At least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day is the minimum for most fruit cultures (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants). Leafy cultures (lettuce, spinach) require less, 4-5 hours. Check the location through different months: what is sunny in July may be in the shade of a neighboring object in February.
Protection from prevailing winds
In Slovenia, western and northeastern winds prevail (burja in Primorska). A greenhouse installed in a windy corridor loses heat 3-5 times faster than a protected one. The consequence: higher heating costs or a shorter season.
Ideal position: windbreak between the house and the tree line, where the wind flows around, not over. A natural fence (hedge, compost heap) on the windy side reduces the load on the structure.
Terrain and drainage
Install the greenhouse on slightly sloping terrain (1-3%), so that rainwater flows away. Flat ground without drainage means wet soil in the greenhouse in spring and autumn, which is great for mold and bad for roots.
If you only have a flat plot: add 15-20 cm of gravel as drainage before laying the frame.
Access to water and electricity
Consider connecting to the water supply (at least seasonally) and electrical power for automatic watering or winter heating. Cables under the ground are cheaper in the long run than manual watering for 5 months a year.
